Soilace
Soilace is a Shelter for the homeless in Singapore located at Block 93 Jalan Dua. The shelter consists of both a Safe, Sound, Sleeping Place (S3P) and Transitional Shelter (TS), for rough sleepers and those in need of temporary housing, respectively.

Designed to establish and restore the overall well-being of the rough sleeper in the S3P and occupant in the TS, Soilace utilises the 14 Elements of Biophilic Design to carefully craft the experience of the user within the space. Therefore, conceptualised around these 14 Elements, Soilace aims to embody the tranquility and calm found within nature.

This project highlights my ability to gain inspiration from the simplicity of Biophilia, conceptualising its 14 Elements to create simple, yet impactful spaces.

Nature in the Space

Nature Analogues

Nature of the Space

Safe Sound Sleeping Place
Gaining inspiration from tangible aspects of nature, designing the S3P allowed me to redefine and reimagine the essence of a shelter.
The intention behind the design was to create a Therapeutic Garden by day cum S3P by night. With an ephemeral presence of natural elements within the space, users are intended to feel a sense of calm and connection to nature.

Designing a space centred around nature also creates a humble and simple impression of the space, making the shelter appear more appealing to rough sleepers.

Transitional Shelter

The Transitional Shelter consists of Public, Private and Semi- Private areas. With an aim of allowing users to connect with nature and each other, there is a heavy emphasis on the shared spaces within the TS.

The TS makes use of Design elements such as curved walls, arches and a curved facade to add to the tranquil ambience of the space.
